Laser printers are still widely in demand and used in large offices. The technology is now evolved and further advanced. Electrically charged toner is attracted and transferred on to a paper by a photographic drum. This image is permanently fused on the output paper, with the help of a heated roller.

Features

If you go looking for printers, you will be left confused and with a headache with all the various choices available. The market offers a lot of different printers that cater to different customer needs. Here are a few features that will help you clarify your wants, needs and expectations or of a printer.

8. All-in-one Printers

Some printers in the market only have a single function of printing. You can not scan, or copy or fax using those. Whereas, an all-in-one printer has all functions like scan, copy and print, and sometimes also comes with the function to fax! With these printers, you can perform up to 3-4 operations using a single machine.

These all rounder printers are just perfect for homes and small businesses. Do keep an eye out for the all-in-one printer.

9. Portable Printers

These prints are specifically designed for travellers and weigh approximately 2-5 pounds. These are mostly inkjet printers that use inkjet technology to produce color prints. They are extremely small and compact for the purpose of travelling, but are large enough to print a standard sheet of paper (8.5-inch-wide).

Duplexing (Two-sided Printing Or Scanning)

This is another great feature that is becoming common in printers. Duplexing refers to scanning or printing of both sides of the pages automatically, i.e. without manually turning over the page and inserting it back to the machine for the other side. If you are required to frequently or constantly scan and/or copy and/or print two-sided pages, you must definitely look out for automatic duplexing in printers.

Duplexing is becoming a major necessity these days, as it also saves paper by printing on both sides. If your machine does not have automatic duplexing, you can do it manually – by printing the first side of a page, pulling it back, flipping it over and inserting it for print one again to get the second side printed.

Connectivity And Networking

Back in the day, printers had only one mode of connectivity – a USB port. The USB port is the standard interface and present in all printers, providing a short and direct wired connection. For this reason, your PC or laptop have to be placed very nearly to your printer for operations – courtesy of the short wire tether.

For this reason, many companies and manufacturers have come up with various different connectivity options, the most popular one being networking Wi-Fi. These printers come with a one button wireless setup and help you connect your printer to your home network to enable printing wirelessly.

Mobile printing and smartapps are other new options that help you connect your printer to your smartphone, tablets, iPads, etc., and allow you to print any content from your connected device wirelessly (e.g.: Apple’s AirPrint).

Some models also feature the Near-Field Communication (NFC) that allows you to connect a tablet or smartphone to your printer, by just touching the device to a particular area on your printer.

The Cloud, Memory Card Slots And Pictbridge

Many printer models now come with PictBridge, Bluetooth capabilities, cloud-based support or built-in memory slots that ease the operation of printing and scanning. These features are especially useful, if you are into photography and need to print photos, as they allow you to directly print photos from your smart device or camera, saving you the need to transfer the photos and the time consumed in the process.

Some models offer memory card, SD card and/or multi-format card reader slots that let you insert the storage card into the printer, allowing you to directly print the data (photos) stored.

If you have PictBridge enabled cameras enabled with USB ports, you can directly connect your printer to the camera via the USB cable for easy and quick printing.

Many models now also offer cloud connectivity, meaning, you can connect and access your online cloud storage, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Flickr, Cloud Print, etc. through your printer with internet access. This enables remote printing, as you can scan and upload a picture/document from anywhere and access it using your printer to print. You will require the internet for this feature.

Miscellaneous

A lot of printers, these days, come with additional parts that help ease the process of printing, such as insert trays and auto document feeders. These are helpful for faxing, copying, printing and scanning multipage documents without any clutter and hassle.
