VA (Volt-ampere) Rating

The VA rating of an inverter is also known as the inverter capacity – it determines the load an inverter can take. It basically requires a small calculation with the power of the inverter calculated in watts.

First, you need to calculate your total power requirement (in watts), as discussed in the previous section. Let’s assume that this value is around 800 watts.

Next, you need to multiply the said 800 watts value with the power factor of the inverter. The power factor essentially indicates the efficiency of the device. Assuming that the power factor for this case is 0.8 – that is, the efficiency of the inverter is 80% – the

VA can be calculated as follows:

Watts = VA*Efficiency
Total power consumption = 800 Watts
Power factor = 0.8
VA = 800/0.8 = 1000 Watts

VA vs. Watts

A lot of manufacturers use both these terms – VA ratings and Watts, to indicate the power consumed and/or supplied by home appliances, often confusing the people between the two.

Power Factor

The terms Watts, VA ratings and Power factor are interrelated and used to specify the capacity of the inverter. The power factor indicates the efficiency of the said inverter.

Any device, inverter included, does not perform at their ideal situations all the time. The running efficiency of any device is found to be slightly less than the ideal efficiency (which is considered as 100%). This difference is indicated by the power factor or efficiency. An inverter with an efficiency of 80% is said to have a power factor of 0.8.

However, a lot of manufacturers refrain from stating the efficiency for a variety of reasons. If the power factor of an inverter or a UPS is not mentioned, it is considered to be 0.6 (or 60%) by default.

Starting And Running Power

The starting and running powers of all electrical devices are different. This difference between the starting power and running power only increases as the load and power consumption requirements increase.

The control circuit shuts the inverter off in case an overload condition is detected. Alongside, the current is monitored and delivered in cases of very low power level. The current is held off until the overload condition is cleared.

The overload prevention mechanisms in inverters come with an auto-resetting system. An overload condition results in warning and a temporary switch-off and restart. This persists till the load is reduced, thus ensuring no harm.

Faults in power supply or distribution lines can lead to an overvoltage condition. Over-voltage damages and degrades the components, and can cause malfunction and even fire.
